Vietnam Social Work Live Blogging

Andrew | May 26th, 2008

The reason we humble WVU Mountaineers make this long trek to Vietnam is to further the field of Social Work in Vietnam. It has been since 2004 that the field has been recognized as a profession in Vietnam.

The WVU faculty- Neal Newfield, Susan Newfield, Chatman Neely, and Jim Keresztury- are all providing lectures and workshops on the field.

Today Susan is up. She is presenting on Child Development theory and practice. The workshop is a major challenge because there are three languages (English, Vietnamese, and Cambodian) in which to instruct participants in the comlex theories about behavior development, growth, and child and adolescent wellness. The workshop has almost 50 participants from the US, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Right now we are having group discussions and role-playing (an extremely interesting experiment in intercultural communication).

Bringing different sets of ideas about helping people creates an important and challenging discussion. But a challenge in communication is the reason we’re here at An Giang University in the city of Long Xuyen on the Mekong River.
